To set the stage, I had been running Untangle and paying for their subscription service for two of their apps (Antivirus, and Application blocker) at a cost of $54/month. You can argue there are better products out there, even their old version, however in comparison to off the shelf routers and other products in this category, this is a much better way to go and its free for home users with no IP restrictions. Included is antivirus, web filtering, application blocking, and a rule based firewall that should be enough for most users once you get past the learning curve. Recently they released a new product called the Sophos XG Firewall which promises to make security a bit easier, and hopefully more secure than many other solutions. For a while now I have hearing about the Sophos UTM and was intrigued by what it packed in for standard features. Having been impacted by security issues in the past, I am always on the lookout for new and hopefully better network security products. ![]()
